-
- I need to gather some info on building an antenna for short
- wave reception? Please excuse my ignorance, I am very new at
- this. Someone told me that All I need to do is connect a very
- long thin wire from an adjacent tree to the house and one from
- the ground and connect them into the adapter that goes into the
- external antenna plug. I have some questions:
-
- 1) How long should this wire be? Is it somehow related to the
- frequencies that I am interested in? What if I am interested in
- more than one?
-
- 2) should the wire be shilded or unshielded?
-
- 3) what should be the gauge of the wire? The thicker the better?
-
- 4) should the wire be the meshed type or a single thread?

- It does not make much difference on most of what you ask. Almost any
- kind of wire will work. Get at least about 50 feet outdoors and up high.

- I think you're overreacting. Apart from the fact that some Region 1
- broadcasters seem to target Region 2 listeners, both the hams AND the
- broadcast stations are legitimate users of the band.
-
- Listeners in Region 1, listening to a very much more powerful broadcast
- station are unlikely to be seriously bothered by a couple of 200 watt cw
- stations slightly off frequency in Region 2.
-
- If the broadcasters don't like that, they can always move out of the ham
- and swbc shared part of the spectrum.

- Subject: Atlas 210X Info Wanted
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- I've been loaned an old Atlas 210X HF transciever, and have an option to
- buy it for a mere 50 dollars.
-
- Using a dummy load, it puts about 50 watts of CW out. But using a Hustler
- 40 meter coil & whip, power drops down to about QRP levels, even though
- the SWR is around 1.5:1. An old-timer with experience with the Atlas
- says this is fairly common; he says the early solid state rigs did not
- like loaded whips, and required a special matching network. (He also
- says that a conventional antenna tuner won't work.)
-
- Evidently part of this required matching network included a large air
- coil. Any idea where to find or buy this item? I'd like to use this as
- a (parked) mobile CW rig, if I can get the power up.
-
- Also, on the large selector knob on the front panel, there is a setting
- marked "CAL". I can find no mention in the manual as to what "CAL" is
- for. Any ideas?
-
- Any other input on the Atlas 210X would be appreciated. Yes, it's
- certainly not the equal of my Icom 735, but the price is right for a
- mobile rig that might be at risk for being stolen.

-
- There are times when I read this newsgroup that it seems like numerous
- subjects on the problems of Amateur Radio are being posted at the same time.
- If I or someone outside (inside?) of Amateur Radio just read these subjects
- they might get the wrong impression that our hobby is riddled with all
- sorts of problems! When I first became a ham radio operator I fully expected
- that 99% of the hams would be great and 1% would be idiots. I haven't been
- disapointed! 8-) In fact I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was more
- on the order of a .01% idiot factor. Is Amateur Radio a perfect world? No,
- but it is far better than most anything out there that is comparable. Any
- one else agree or disagree with me on this?

-
- I'm currently an outsider, having just recently taken an interest in
- amateur radio. That's why I've been reading this newsgroup.
-
- Obviously, the hobby is riddled with problems! *EVERYTHING* is riddled
- with problems. [ Check out comp.os.386bsd.* for example. ] If I didn't
- see people here griping and moaning about things, I would think you were
- all a bunch of zombies who weren't actually *doing* anything. Instead
- I see lively discussion.
-
- It is human nature (and especially prevalent on USENET) to complain
- about problems. Things that aren't a problem just aren't noteworthy.
- For example, I set my radio to 5.000 Mhz and heard this guy telling
- me what time it was. Anybody want to have a long discussion about that?
- Ahhh, but if I heard 2 Live Crew, *that* would be noteworthy!
-
- b.t.w. It seems a lot more friendly and polite here than in many of
- the other hobby oriented newsgroups. This is good. :)

-
- Then you need to put up a better antenna. The maritime net on 14300 kc
- has been around for at least 20 years handling traffic, WX and phone
- patches for sailors in the Pacific. Back in '82 I sailed a boat from
- Hawaii to San Francisco and checked into that net daily - they provided
- phone patches to the Weather Service and to my parents daily.
-
- At any one time there are dozens of sailboats plying the Pacific and
- 14300 provides a lifeline for them. Distress and medical calls are
- handled periodically on there. The Coast Guard will, when necessary,
- put their 10kW xmtr on 14300 to directly handle a distress call.
